Learning Theories ... Connectivism, COIP & MOOC's

Prior to the Module I had no clue on what connectivism, COIP's . Thus the questions began with the definition of each,  their relevance in distance education( DE) and whether there was a connection between my DE outlook and perspective and connectivism.

Connectivism  incorporates the aspect of the group within the context of individual learning, pointing to the importance of group dynamics for maximum efficacy of learning.

George Siemens ( considered the originator of Connectivism) points out several tenets. " Learning (defined as actionable knowledge) can reside outside of ourselves (within an
organization or a database), is focused on connecting specialized information sets, and the connections that enable us to learn more are more important than our current state of knowing."
(Siemens, 2005)

Connectivism seems a natural fit in this  technologically interconnected era. The fact that we are now able to remove many of the barriers that exist with regards to interactions ( time, space, economics). Connectivism points to the fact that learning as solely an individual activity is a model that is shifting, that with the advent of new technologies, as well as the provision multiple nodes of instantaneous connections, learning now occurs within a context of the group. The world is increasingly spending more and more time interconnected( even when isolated) and thus connectivism offers a learning theory that addresses this shifting paradigm.
